An air spade is a tool that an arborist can use for root excavation. It uses compressed air to remove soil away from sensitive tree roots.
Compacted soil around a tree's roots can cause poor water or nutrient absorption which can affect the health of your tree.
Arborists can use this tool in order to expose the tree roots to prepare for inspection when trying to diagnose tree or root problems and apply treatments.
An air spade can also be used to relieve problems like piles of "mulch volcanoes" around the bottom of trees or excavate the soil at the base area of a tree that was planted too deeply.
An air spade is powerful enough for quick and easy excavation but is also gentle enough to not disturb small, sensitive roots.
